Who do I love?

Filed under: Love — by Aish Al Akhirah @ 6:53 am

Alot of us claim to love Allah SWT. I am one of them. But rarely do we ever reflect on the validity of such a claim. Because it could be that we are lying to ourselves and to Allah SWT more than anyone else. Let’s ask ourselves what does it mean to say you love something? What are the actions of one towards the ‘beloved’ thing? If you claim to love Allah SWT, it’s indeed a wide and great claim. Re-evaluate it. True love of Allah SWT necessitates TOTAL obedience and submission to Him.

“Do you see the one who is taking as his lord his own desires?” (Qur’an 25:43).

SubhanAllah, and this could be the case of the disbeliever AND the believer as well. You cannot say you truly believe and love Allah SWT unless you give up every desire you wish to follow, and you strive in Allah SWT’s Path to please Him and Him only. In reality we could be a slave to fashion, food, money, a person or any other thing which is not one bit worthy of our worship (the only being worthy of worship is Allah SWT).

We have to realize that it is ONLY because of Allah SWT that we have our money, our clothes, our friends…our life. Every single blessing in our life is innumerous; it is incapable of being counted.

Then which of the favours of your Lord will ye deny?

Truely this world is a test and it’s only our attachment with Allah SWT that can save us from eternal Hellfire. It’s only through Allah’s Help alone that we are able to breathe, walk and talk. It is only through Him that we can attain Jannatul Firdous. Who or what then deserves our full and undivided love?

Check yourself. What do you spend most of your time doing through out the day? What are your goals in life? What motivates you? Do you find Allah SWT as a common factor behind all of these aspects in your life? Indeed you will be recompensed according to yor intention. So what better intention is there than doing something for the sake of Allah SWT only? If our day, our career, our speech, our deeds are not for the sake of Allah SWT. We have a serious problem which resonates from our soul.

So let’s be honest with ourselves. Because deception only leads to destruction. Deception is completely useless and meaningless. It will be your friend in this life temporarily, but in reality it is paving the path for your destruction in the Akhirah. Let’s purify our souls with the remembrance of Allah SWT not only with our heart but our actions. True peace and harmony will reside in our heart only if we Remember the one who created us from a measly substance and gave us this life which we so often abuse.

“…for without doubt in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find satisfaction.” 13:28

This is a short poem which a friend sent to me and subhanAllah it can’t be more true…the meaning is rich in my perspective. Please take a minute to read it inshaa’Allah. I hope we reflect on the intended meaning of this poem. The writer is Ibnul Qayyim al Jawziyyah, rahimahullah.

The love of the Beloved
must be unconditionally returned.

If you claim love
yet oppose the Beloved,
then your love is but a pretence.
You love the enemies of your Beloved
and still seek love in return.

You fight the beloved of your Beloved.

Is this Love or the following of shaytaan?

True devotion is nothing
but total submission
of body and soul
to One Love.

We have seen humans claim to submit,
yet their loyalties are many.

They put their trust here, and their hope there,
and their love is without consequence.

  1. Aaslaamu Aalikium Wa Rahamatuh Allahi Wa Barakatuh,

A beautiful reminder ukhtee. I love how you began it with a question, it leaves the reader to ask himself what truely are the actions that we take to please our beloved ones. I have always found the following quote to be truely amazing, relating to the one who is in love with the words of Allah swt:

“The one in love with her Beloved
    finds nothing sweeter
    than the seclusion
with her Beloved and His words.”

    Baraak Allahu feeky Aish, a jewel of a reminder Masha’allah. . .

May Allah swt increase the love in our hearts towards Him, and make us of those who privately and publicly worship him. Ameen.

  4. Assalam Alaikum Wa Rahmatullahi Wa Barakatuhu

mashaAllaah thoughtfully composed and an awesome reminder. Wallaahi, it’s so easy to say we love Allaah and His Messenger sal Allaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam. But as (I think it was) Anwar al Awlaki (may Allaah hasten his release, Ameen) said, how can we claim to love someone we do not even know? I believe this was from the seerah series, though I am unsure.

anyways, I answered your question on my blog =P

  5. WS WR WB
what an awesome point made by Shaykh Anwar al-Awlaki (ameen to the dua).

That’s exactly it. Truly knowing and fully understanding someone allows for feelings such as love or hate to enter our hearts towards that thing/person.

Similarly, truly knowing Allah SWT, believing in Him and His Punishment/Warnings/Glad tidings…how can a person NOT have the complete combo of love/fear/hope with regards to Him SWT?

jazakee Allahu khayran sis Salafiya for your awesome input:) Looking forward to more posts/comments of yours bi’idnillah:)!
